Germany

The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe stretches for more than 600 acres close to the city of Kassel, in the heart of Germany. The sculptured gardens are inspired by classic English gardens of the past and were first created by Landgrave Carl in the 17th century. They were later expanded on by Landgrave Wilhelm IX and were created to show the full prowess of the Landgraves of Hesse.

The park is well known for its fantastic water features, including a cascade fountain that descends from the famous Hercules statue at the highest point of the land. The water follows its course for a distance of 350m without the use of pumps. Incidentally, the likeness of Hercules was chosen by the Landgrave to portray his own strength, courage and resourcefulness.

As well as several other Baroque water features, which UNESCO pinpointed as the major reason why World Heritage Status was granted in 2013, landmarks within the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe include the Wilhelmshöhe Palace and the mock-medieval castle of Löwenburg.
