Constance (or Konstanz as it is spelt in German) is the largest town of the Lake Constance area and is characterised by the German-Swiss border that runs through it. The picturesque Old Town has many historic buildings and quaint alleyways and is overlooked by the majestic Münster Cathedral. The city is traditionally engaged in all sorts of cultural activities and with museums, the theatre and the philharmonic orchestra, Constance has been a high-class cultural centre in the region for many years.

Fred.\ Holidays can also help you plan your trip to other parts of Austria. Check out our Innsbruck city breaks and hotels in Graz for more great holiday ideas. Alternatively, if you are looking for a trip to another part of Germany, we have plenty of options available there too.

Münster

This 1000 year old church looks proudly over the city of Constance. The church itself is a masterclass in architectural style, with combinations of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and baroque styles, all crowned by a filigreed spire.

Römersiedlung

Housed inside a glass pyramid in front of the Münster, lives the remains of the Roman fort Constantia. You can join one of the guided tours and be lead from the tourist office down to the ruins.

Rosgartenmuseum

Once a butchers’ guildhall, this stunning building is now home to the Rosgartenmuseum of regional art and history. Inside there is a strong emphasis on medieval panel painting and sculpture.

Imperia

Situated at the end of the pier, stands the Imperia on her rotating pedastal. The 9m-high sculpture of a buxom prostitute, is immortalised in a novel by Honoré de Balzac.

Münsterhof

With outdoor seating set up in front of the Münster, this slick bistro is the perfect placed for lunch and dinnertime. Serving up cordon bleu with pan-fried potatoes to asparagus-filled Maultaschen in creamy chive sauce are substantial and satisfying.

Voglhaus

With a cosy and contemporary interior complete with open fire, the Voglhaus is a popular destination with the locals. This cafe serves up a range of perfect lunchtime and snack treats including wholegrain bagels, wraps and cupcakes, as well as smoothies and speciality coffees.

La Bodega

This birhgt, candy coloured restaurant is hidden away in Niederburg and serves up tapas from Canarian potatoes to stuffed calamari.
