One of the most beautiful Italian lakes, it is also believed to be the largest of the pre-Alpine lakes, hence the name "Maggiore". Its 11 islands are among the many beauties of this lake, as are its beautiful villas and imposing fortresses and castles. Nature lovers will find Lake Maggiore the ideal place to spend their holiday thanks to the many botanical gardens, such as Villa Taranto, that offer more than a thousand plants. The Val Grande and Ticino Valley national parks, the latter being a UNESCO biosphere reserve, also provide some breathtaking landscapes to explore. For sports lovers, Lake Maggiore is a natural paradise. There's the chance to go hiking, biking, or horseback riding and the option to play golf, try canoeing, give water skiing a go or even scuba dive.
Isola dei Pescatori is the most northerly Island of the three principal Borromean Islands and is about 350 meters long by 100 meters wide. Delicious restaurants, a beautiful town complete with narrow streets, and a romantic church are all waiting for you.
Visit Arona to see one of the largest statues in the world. The Colossus of St. Carlo Borromeo is more than 35 metres tall.
Take the cable car from nearby Carciano up to both the Botanic Garden of Alpinia and the peak of Mottarone, a popular ski resort.
The Sacro Monte of Ghiffa, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies along the slopes of Mount Cargiago and on the shores of nearby Lake d'Orta you can visit the sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, dating from the late fifteenth century.
The restaurant, situated in the heart of Stresa, can be considered a true restaurant of Lake Maggiore. Its unsophisticated and intimate atmosphere makes it different from the other venues.
High fashion boutiques can be found in Stresa and Ascona.
In nearly every town next to the lake, you can find weekly open-air markets with a wide range of food, clothes and much more. On Monday, it is in Baveno, on Tuesday in Arona, on Wednesday in Luino... every day somewhere else.
