The town's origin dates back to the Middle Ages and visitors can find many beautiful sights and attractions bearing witness to the city's old heritage. These include the stunning cathedral and the Jahrtausendturm tower, which is the third highest wooden tower in the world.

There are also so many other parts of Germany to discover. Check out our Leipzig city breaks or hotels in Sylt, for example.

Dom

This Gothic basilica is Magdeburg's main historical sight, and dates all the way back to 937 when it was founded by Otto I. It is now the burial place of Otto and his wife Editha and is filled with artistic highlights including sculptures and a antiwar memorial.

Kunstmuseum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen

This decommissioned medieval monastery is Magdeburg's oldest building. Now a museum, it is home to regional sculptures and contemporary art.

Rathaus

The original bronze door for the town hall was destroyed during World War 2, and now boast a new bronze relief door designed by artist Heinrich Apel.

Elbauenpark & Jahrtausendturm

Created for a garden exhibition in 1999, this gorgeous garden is home to a multitude of roses, sculptures, gardens and a butterfly house. There is also an unusual feature of a 60m high Millennial Tower, which claims to be the world's tallest wooden tower.
